Planetary Society Gives Capitol Hill Presentation on Global Warming
\”Understanding our home planet better is a key benefit of space exploration,\” said Friedman. \”Both explorations of the solar system and Earth observations from space have contributed greatly to that understanding,\” Bill Nye said. \”Earth observing is a key to our survival, and goes hand-in-hand with planetary exploration as part of humankind’s efforts to create a hopeful and positive future.\”

On this coming Wednesday, June 25, 2008, the Planetary Society’s vice-president, Bill Nye, will give a presentation on Capitol Hill at the Rayburn House Office Building, urging a global response to climate changes on Planet Earth, with the United States as a leader with increased space observations and greater global coordination. Reports are quoted as saying that \”the Planetary Society is considered the largest space-interest group in the world, also the leading non-governmental organization advocate of space exploration.\”
Scientific speakers, Charles Kennel and Merrien Moore, along with Mary Kicza, NOAA Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Informative Services, will be introduced by Louis Friedman—Executive Director of the Planetary Society. Charles Kennel has been chosen as the appointed chair of the National Research Council’s Space Studies Board, and with Merrien Moore will speak on the global climate change dangers. Backed by the U.S. National Research Council on Earth Observation Satellites Strategic Implementation Team, the scientists will speak about Earth’s observation and its international government programs, referring to the fact earth’s observations at the present time are showing immerse changes taking place on Earth. This all began last fall the Planetary Society was requested to join a working group for Earth Observation and Climate Change, participating with the prestigious Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C.
The CSIS is a non-partisan Washington, D.C. \”think tank\” which focuses on global strategic issues in many fields—science, industry, and government—studying together in order to explore significant issues \”in Earth observations.\” The importance of the group lies in the fact it accesses and observes current and planned Earth missions, key industries and Earth’s observational value to them, and assisting in better understanding and preparation for any of the global environmental changes.
